How to Edit a PDF on iPhone for Free (No App to Download)

Someone emails you a PDF, and all you have with you is your iPhone. You can fill it in, add text, sign it and send it back without installing anything. There are two free ways to do it: the Markup tools built into your iPhone, and a PDF editor that runs in Safari.

Option 1: Use Markup, built into your iPhone

Your iPhone can fill in and sign many PDFs on its own:

  1. Open the PDF from Mail or the Files app.
  2. Tap Markup.
  3. Tap a blank field on the form and type. If the form has no fields to tap, use Add Text Form Box and drag the box to where the answer goes.
  4. To sign, tap the + button in the Markup toolbar, then Add Signature. Your iPhone saves the signature for next time.

Apple's guide Fill out forms, sign documents, and create signatures on iPhone has the details.

Option 2: Use a free PDF editor in Safari

A browser-based editor gives you the same tools on your iPhone and on your computer, with text, signatures, form fields and page changes all in one place.

  1. Save the PDF to Files first. If it's an email attachment, open it, tap Share, then Save to Files.
  2. Open the editor. In Safari, go to edit a PDF on your iPhone, tap Choose PDF and pick the file.
  3. Add text. The tools sit at the bottom of the screen. Tap Text, tap the page where the text should go, and type. Spread two fingers on the page first to zoom in, so the text lands right on the line.
  4. Sign. Tap Sign and draw your signature with your finger. Drag it onto the line and pull its corner to resize it.
  5. Change pages (optional). Open Pages to delete, rotate or reorder pages.
  6. Download. Tap Download. The edited copy has "-edited" added to its name, and you'll usually find it in the Downloads folder in the Files app.

Sending it back

Open the edited PDF in Files, tap Share, and choose Mail or the app you want to send it with. Scroll through it once before you send it, to check every answer is in the right place.

Tips for editing on a small screen

  • Zoom in before you tap to place text. It's the easiest way to get answers onto the right line.
  • Draw your signature slowly. A steady finger signature usually looks closest to your pen signature.
  • Keep the original. Both methods leave you a PDF to send; if you might need to start again, keep the original file too.

Is it free?

Yes, both ways are free. The browser editor needs no account and adds no watermark, and the PDF is opened and saved inside Safari rather than uploaded to a server.
