How to Edit a PDF on Android for Free
You can fill in, sign and edit a PDF on an Android phone without paying for an app. Here are two free ways: the Google Drive app, which is on most Android phones, and a PDF editor that runs in Chrome.
Option 1: Google Drive
To fill in a form:
- Open the PDF in the Google Drive app.
- At the bottom right, tap Edit, then Form filling.
- Tap each field and type.
If you don't see the option, the PDF may not be fillable. Google notes that some forms, including XFA forms and documents that are only laid out to look like a form, can't be filled in this way. (Google's guide)
To draw or highlight: open the PDF in Drive and tap the annotate button at the bottom right. You can write or highlight with your finger or a stylus.
Option 2: A free PDF editor in Chrome
This works for flat forms too, and puts text, signatures and page changes in one place.
- Open the editor. In Chrome, go to edit a PDF on Android and tap Choose PDF. Pick the file from Downloads, from an email attachment you've saved, or from Drive.
- Add text. The tools are at the bottom of the screen. Tap Text, tap the page where the text should go, and type. Spread two fingers on the page to zoom in first.
- Sign. Tap Sign and draw your signature with your finger, then drag it onto the line and resize it from the corner.
- Tick boxes and dates. Tap ✓ or ✗ and then the box, or Date for today's date.
- Change pages (optional). Open Pages to delete, rotate or reorder pages.
- Download. Tap Download. The edited copy is saved to your phone with "-edited" added to its name.
Tips for editing on your phone
- Zoom in before you tap to place text; it's the easiest way to hit the right line.
- Draw your signature slowly. A steady finger signature looks closest to your pen signature.
- Check the file before you send it. Open the downloaded copy and scroll through every page.
Is it free?
Yes. Google Drive is free, and the browser editor needs no account and adds no watermark. The PDF is opened and saved in Chrome on your phone rather than uploaded to a server.
