How to Convert a PDF to Markdown and Check the Text and Images
A PDF handout can be easy to read and awkward to reuse. You may want to quote a paragraph, add your own notes, or turn its instructions into a checklist. Markdown gives you editable text, but it does not carry a PDF's page layout with it.
This walkthrough uses a small garden-volunteer brief to show what to check after conversion, including the difference between downloading a Markdown file and downloading a bundle with pictures.
Disclosure: this AI-generated guide is from the LensUp team and uses our converter. Keep the original PDF alongside the converted copy.
Start with the document you have
Try selecting a sentence in your PDF reader. If it selects as text, the PDF has a text layer. If you can only select the page as a picture, recognition may be needed. A text layer can also be incomplete or badly ordered, so this is a useful first check rather than a guarantee.
Use a PDF you are allowed to process. If a document has an opening password, use an authorized workflow to obtain a readable copy.
Open LensUp's PDF to Markdown converter, choose the PDF, and leave Reading mode on Automatic: text first, OCR when needed for a first attempt. Choose the language printed in the document. The English page currently lists a free file limit of 50 MB and a maximum of 200 pages; check the displayed limits before starting a larger document.
Press Convert PDF. The free workflow is described by the tool as browser-local. That concerns document processing, not a promise that the website has no cookies or analytics. Pro processing was not used for this guide.
Compare every page before editing
When the result is ready, use the Page selector to move through the document. Compare the Markdown with the original page shown beside it. Preview shows how the selected page's Markdown renders; Markdown lets you edit it.
Pay attention to the page's method label. Our fictional two-page PDF had selectable text, yet the page containing a diagram was marked OCR used, while the second page was marked Text extracted. A PDF with text can still use recognition on a particular page. The current English interface lists a daily allowance for free OCR, so check the result for any pages it says were not recognized.
For each page, check:
- The beginning and end of each paragraph, especially around columns or pictures.
- Times, quantities, names and codes against the original.
- Headings and list items in the rendered preview.
- Anything that depends on the placement of a diagram, table or formula.
In our download, the meeting time 09:30, the 3 notebooks and the 2 markers were present. The numbered instructions were readable. However, Plan for the morning remained plain text rather than a Markdown heading. The diagram's labels, Bed A and Bed B, also appeared as text. Those words do not reproduce the diagram's spatial meaning.
If a line should be a heading, put ## before it in the editable Markdown and check Preview again. Choose heading levels that fit your notes. Do not treat a larger-looking heading in the original as proof that the converter has recognized its role correctly.
Choose the download that fits your notes
Download .md gives you a Markdown text file. Open the actual download in a text editor and check that it contains the pages you intended to keep. In our test, garden-brief.md contained both pages with page headings and a separator. It did not contain image references.
If the pictures matter, choose Download Markdown + original pages (.zip) instead. Our ZIP contained document.md, an extracted diagram in an images folder, and snapshots of both PDF pages in a pages folder. The bundled Markdown included relative links to those files. Its contents therefore differed from the standalone .md download.
Unzip the bundle into its own folder. Keep document.md, images and pages in their relative locations when you move the material into a notes folder. Moving only the Markdown file leaves its picture links without their targets. A viewer that supports Markdown image links can display the referenced files; otherwise, open the page snapshots directly for comparison.
The diagram extracted from this small sample matched the source image's pixels, and all three image references in the bundle pointed to existing files. That does not establish that every PDF graphic can be extracted: keep the original for vectors, unusual embedded content and layouts that need visual interpretation.
Keep an editable copy and a reference copy
Use Markdown for the material you want to revise, search or annotate. Retain the PDF when page appearance, exact wording or a diagram's arrangement matters. A tidy note is useful; a tidy note with an unnoticed wrong number is less useful than the original.
Test scope: on October 23, 2026, the live free workflow converted one fictional two-page English PDF containing ordinary text, numbered instructions and one simple raster diagram. Both downloads were opened and checked. Complex tables, formulas, handwriting, large files, multilingual documents and Pro processing were not tested. No independent network audit was performed.
